The free event changes format to be held over two days, one exclusively for school groups; the program also includes a visit to Sirius
How does a particle accelerator work? How small is the nanoscale? What are biorenewables? How can we develop new medicines? This is the time to ask questions!
The campus of the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), in Campinas (SP), will once again open its doors to a world of interested visitors on August 9 and 10, 2024, at Ciência Aberta [Open Day]. The free event, now in its 6th edition, is an opportunity for science lovers to get a closer look at Sirius – the Brazilian particle accelerator, learn about the cutting-edge research carried out at CNPEM, and visit one of Latin America’s leading technology parks.
The schedule, to be announced on the event’s website, is suitable for all age groups and includes fun attractions designed for children.
Ciência Aberta is to be held over two days
In an innovative format, Ciência Aberta 2024 will be held over two days for the first time. On Friday, August 9, the campus will exclusively welcome school groups and excursions from all over the country from 9 am. On Saturday, August 10, it will be the general public’s turn to enjoy activities that simplify science and bring it closer to everyday life.
School groups interested in attending Ciência Aberta on August 9 should fill in the application form at this address. Applications will be evaluated by the organization, which will provide additional details over the next few weeks. The general public can visit the campus without any appointment on August 10th. On Saturday the gates will open at 9 am and the last admission time will be 3 pm.
Diverse program, infrastructure, and food court
Since 2016, Ciência Aberta has brought together more than 40,000 visitors driven by curiosity and attracted by an interest in science, technology, and innovation.
In 2024, as in previous years, the public will have access to Sirius – one of the most advanced particle accelerators on the planet and the only one in Latin America, as well as activities programmed by all the units that integrate the Center and carry out research in the areas of Biosciences, Nanotechnology, and Biorenewables. The event will also feature activities prepared by the engineering and technology team and Ilum, a free higher education course in science and technology offered by CNPEM.
Ciência Aberta will have rest areas, hydration points, and toilets distributed around the campus, and restrooms equipped with baby-changing facilities at strategic points. You can get around the campus on foot, but a van will take you to key points and will cater exclusively to older citizens, pregnant women, families with toddlers, and those with special needs.
About Ciência Aberta [Open Day]
CNPEM is committed to sharing its enthusiasm for science and is always open to research and dialogue with society, promoting Ciência Aberta [Open Day] every year, a free event (with a voluntary contribution of 1 kilo of non-perishable food) aimed at promoting science in an even broader and more inclusive way, encouraging scientific dissemination and the active participation of the public in knowledge discovery. The program is designed to help people understand how experiments are carried out, how cutting-edge infrastructure is used to advance the knowledge that drives the development of new technologies and seeks solutions to problems in virtually all areas, such as health, energy, food production, the environment, and the design of new materials.
About CNPEM
A sophisticated and effervescent environment for research and development, unique in Brazil and present in few scientific centers in the world, the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) is a private non-profit organization, under the supervision of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). The Center operates four National Laboratories and is the birthplace of the most complex project in Brazilian science – Sirius – one of the most advanced synchrotron light sources in the world. CNPEM brings together highly specialized multi-thematic teams, globally competitive laboratory infrastructures open to the scientific community, strategic lines of investigation, innovative projects in partnership with the productive sector and training of researchers and students. The Center is an environment driven by the search for solutions with impact in the areas of Health, Energy and Renewable Materials, Agro-environment, and Quantum Technologies. As of 2022, with the support of the Ministry of Education (MEC), CNPEM expanded its activities with the opening of the Ilum School of Science. The interdisciplinary higher course in Science, Technology and Innovation adopts innovative proposals with the aim of offering excellent, free, full-time training with immersion in the CNPEM research environment. Through the CNPEM 360 Platform, it is possible to explore, in a virtual and immersive way, the main environments and activities of the Center, visit: https://pages.cnpem.br/cnpem360/.
