About the facility

The Spectroscopy and Calorimetry Laboratory (LEC) is a key resource for studying the biophysics of proteins in order to develop and optimize methods to study macromolecular interactions, dynamics, and stability.

This facility makes it possible to conduct biophysical studies on macromolecules, nanoparticles, and polymers in solution. It provides information about structure, coiling, molecular binding, dissociation constants, stability, size, shape, and oligomeric state It also has the capacity to estimate molecular weight, zeta potential, shape and profiling of biological macromolecules, and some polymer and nanoparticle measurements.

How to submit research proposals

Proposals can be submitted on a rolling basis, through the SAU Online. If you have questions, email the CNPEM User’s Office at edu@cnpem.br.

Equipment

Jasco V-730CRF UV-visible spectrophotometer

Determines the concentration of macromolecules in solution, interaction kinetics studies, and solution purity analysis.

Jasco J-810-150S circular dichroism spectropolarimeter

Analysis of secondary protein structure; analysis of tertiary DNA and protein structure; measures the stability of proteins and charge-transfer transitions, analyzes alterations in the secondary structure of macromolecules through interactions with other molecules.

ISS K2 multifrequency fluorometer

For studies on the behavioral structure of proteins and DNA according to changes in experimental conditions or from interactions with other molecules, monitoring interactions between different macromolecules, kinetic analysis, etc.

Malvern OMNISEC CHR6000 GPC/SEC chromatography system

Determines the absolute molecular weight of macromolecules, distribution of molecular weight, polymer size and branching, radius of macromolecules, and intrinsic viscosity.

Beckman Coulter Optima XL-A analytical ultracentrifuge

Determines the number of components in a sample, molar mass and distribution of the sedimentation coefficient of each component, and the stoichiometry of macromolecular complexes.

Malvern Zetasizer Nano ZS90 size analyzer

Determines the size of molecules in solution, polydispersity of solutions, measures zeta potential.
