During the first days after birth, the heart exhibits significant regenerative capacity, but the adult heart has limited capacity to regenerate after a heart attack. Because of this difference, researchers at LNBio are focusing on understanding the molecular mechanisms behind the loss of this regenerative capacity in the adult heart in order to identify and develop new therapies.

Studies conducted by the group revealed for the first time that inhibiting the PDK4 enzyme promotes proliferation of cardiomyocytes, significantly improves cardiovascular function, and reduces pathological remodeling after a heart attack. Their findings suggest a promising role for inhibiting PDK4 as a cardioprotective and regenerative strategy to treat cardiac diseases.
