The Fox laboratory has a longstanding interest in the interplay of cells, extracellular matrix and proteinases in cancer cell migration and invasion. The tools/approaches commonly used in the laboratory include protein chemistry, proteomics, molecular and cell biology, mass spectrometry and gene expression analyses. Recently the laboratory has been focusing on the “cross-talk” of melanoma and the stroma by investigating the proteomics and gene expression profiles of cells in this microenvironment both in vitro and using laser capture microscopy, in vivo. Intriguing results demonstrating how cancer cells can manipulate the gene expression patterns of stromal cells have recently been published. The signaling mechanisms for this phenomenon are currently being explored. Furthermore, the differences of “cross-talk” between high and low invasive melanoma cells and stroma are also being investigated.
