Workshop on Drug Design and Neglected Tropical Diseases

Oct 28, 2013 - Nov 01, 2013

Synopsis – Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), caused by infections by parasites (protists and worms), bacteria and viruses form still, in 2013, a tremendous health problem in most tropical and subtropical areas of the world, affecting, according to most recent estimates by WHO, approximately 2.7 billion people and killing over 500,000 humans worldwide each year. For many of these diseases no adequate treatment is available, while resistance is in several cases eroding the usefulness the few good therapeutics available.  New efficacious, affordable drugs are badly needed, but efforts by the pharmaceutical industry have been limited because the low prospects for financial returns for its investments, explaining why these diseases are ‘neglected’.

The Workshop will comprise different activities: lectures, discussions, poster session, exercises and visiting to the Brazilian Biosciences National Laboratory (LNBio), Brazil. The ultimate objective of the Workshop is that the experience gained by the students will enable them to improve their skills on drug discovery for neglected tropical diseases. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to discuss their own results with experts and optimally establish new collaboration network.

The meeting is organized by the Center for Innovation in Biodiversity and Drug Discovery, a joint initiative resulting from renowned Brazilian Institutions with the major goals of performing basic and applied science and to developing technologies for all areas of biodiversity and drug discovery and the Brazilian Biosciences National Laboratory (LNBio), dedicated to cutting-edge research and innovation focused on biotechnology and drug development.
